Mt Lyford was established in the mid 1980s and is one of only a handful of freehold mountain areas to be found in New Zealand.  Today the village has developed into an exclusive private residential community with 20 families living there permanently and some 45 holiday homes being utilized all year round.  The unique alpine character of the village is due to architectural covenants in place to protect and enhance the village high country environment.
